Concussion Beyond the Sideline: Screening, Differential Diagnosis, Rehabilitation, Return to Learn & Return to Sport

Concussion is encountered across sports medicine, orthopedic, neurologic, pediatric, vestibular, and outpatient rehabilitation settings, yet concussion-specific examination and rehabilitation may receive limited dedicated attention during entry-level physical therapy education. This one-hour course provides physical therapists with a clinically focused overview of concussion screening, differential diagnosis, rehabilitation, Return-to-Learn, and Return-to-Sport. Participants will review the SCAT6 and SCOAT6, identify common post-concussion clinical profiles, and examine how cervical, vestibular, ocular-motor, autonomic, headache, psychological, and exertional impairments can contribute to persistent symptoms. Special attention will be given to research from John Leddy, MD, and colleagues at the University at Buffalo, including the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test and individualized sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise.

Christopher “Chris” Napoli, MS, MBA, ATC, is a licensed athletic trainer, physical education professional, educator, and sports medicine administrator with extensive experience in secondary school, collegiate, and sports performance settings. He serves as President of the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association Inc. (NYSATA), is an adjunct faculty member in Hofstra University’s athletic training program and is an independent medical consultant for various soccer leagues including the NWSL. His professional work includes athletic injury evaluation and rehabilitation, concussion management, emergency care, interprofessional education, and advocacy for athletic training and athlete safety.
