Evidence-Based Examination and Management of Foot and Ankle Pathologies

This course will provide an in-depth understanding of evidence-based examination and management of selected foot and ankle pathologies. A review of clinical anatomy and biomechanics will transition into key examination techniques, selected manual therapy interventions, and pertinent therapeutic exercise selection. A discussion on loading and responses to loading will also be discussed. Evidence will be incorporated where it is possible to provide the highest quality of patient care. Participants will be able to apply this information immediately in the clinic.

Course Learning Objectives

Following this presentation / session, participants will be able to:

• Identify and apply radiographic algorithms for plain films in the foot and ankle.
• Understand and apply clinical anatomy and biomechanics in the examination and management of individuals with foot and ankle pathologies.
• Practice and apply key examination techniques in individuals with foot and ankle pathologies.
• Discuss and apply sound clinical reasoning when developing loading programs for individuals with tendinopathies of the foot and ankle. 
• Develop and fine tune performance of selected manual therapy interventions of the foot and ankle.
• Integrate sound clinical reasoning in the selection of manual therapy, taping, and exercise techniques for individuals with foot and ankle pain. 
• Integrate concepts of evidence-based practice in combination with health services research to manage patients with foot and ankle pathologies.  

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be asked to self-assess the achievement of these educational objectives using case studies. There will also be a pre-posttest short quiz assessing the course objectives.

Michael Masaracchio, PT, DPT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT has been a practicing physical therapist for 25 years. He is currently an Associate Professor and Chair at Long Island University’s Department of Physical Therapy. In addition, Dr. Masaracchio serves as the Director of the Anatomy Lab at Long Island University since 2007. Clinically, Dr. Masaracchio is the clinical director at Masefield and Cavallaro Physical Therapy, where he specializes in the examination and management of orthopedic and sports related pathologies. He is a board certified orthopedic and sports clinical specialist from the American Physical Therapy Specialization Council, and has served on the Specialization Academy of Content Experts for the sports physical therapy examination from 2013-2016. He completed his Fellowship in Manual Therapy from Regis University in 2013 and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Dr. Masaracchio has co-authored 40 articles, a textbook, and a book chapter. He has presented at local, national, and international conferences on the examination and treatment of various orthopedic and sports related pathologies, as well as certain areas of health services research related to costs of care.
